About Course

This demo of the “Future Minds: Connecting AI and the Moana” program is designed for educators to learn more about the programme and experience some of the student lessons firsthand.

Our programme is designed for students aged 10 to 14 years old to learn about marine biodiversity and the application of AI in conservation efforts.

Wild About AI has been designed to fully support educators in delivering Te Mātaiaho New Zealand Curriculum. The program fosters critical thinking and ethical awareness, encouraging students to question how technology is developed and used. Our cross-curricular program is both educational and engaging, enabling students to learn about digital technologies, mātauranga Māori and environmental conservation.

At the heart of Wild About AI is the idea that technology and nature are not separate, but can work together. Students actively participate in science through hands-on activities such as classifying fish species in underwater videos. This “citizen science” approach not only educates students about marine biodiversity but also contributes to the valuable mahi (work) of conservation projects, such as Spyfish Aotearoa.

The program also fosters connections between schools, local hapū (sub-tribes), and the community to develop environmental leadership and enhance the mauri (life force) and ecology of Aotearoa.

Demo version – Future Minds: Connecting AI and the Moana
This lesson is a collection of slides from the 6 lessons that students undertake when signed up to the Wild About AI program. Wild About AI has been designed to fully support teachers in delivering a Te Mātaiaho New Zealand Curriculum aligned, cross curricular program that is engaging for students in years 6 -10. Wild About AI will teach students about AI while also informing them abotu the importance of conservation. Future Minds: Connecting AI and the Moana introduces students to machine learning and the important role AI has in contributing to Marine Conservation.
