The Ngā Motu/Sugar Loaf Islands Marine Protected Area is just outside New Plymouth.

Purpose: Protection of marine life and the ecosystem, while allowing some recreational fishing.
Restrictions: Commercial fishing, set netting, long lining, spoil dumping, and activities that may disturb the foreshore and seabed are restricted.
Activities: Recreational rod fishing is permitted, subject to restrictions on method (lines with three hooks or less) and species (trolling for kingfish and kahawai).
