    What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial intelligence, or “AI,” is the ability for a computer to think and learn. With AI, computers can perform tasks that are typically done by people, including processing language, problem-solving, and learning.

    AI Examples:

    • Movie Recommendations: If you have ever streamed a movie on Netflix, for example, you may have noticed that you will receive recommendations for other movies based on what you have watched already. That’s because of AI!
    • Chatbots: Many websites have chatbots that help answer your questions. These chatbots are not typically run by people – they are AI!
    • Search Engines: Most people use search engines like Google every single day. Search engines use AI to rank websites in your search results.

How does Spyfish Aotearoa use Artificial Intelligence?

The data that Spyfish Aotearoa volunteers code is being used to train machine learning models to identify and count the fish automatically. This means that the scientists will be able to use the data from their surveys almost immediately to provide advice on actions to take for marine conservation. The new freed-up time will also mean they can focus on new research and coming up with even better conservation methods to protect Aotearoa’s biodiversity.

This short video from Wildlife.ai explains how Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning can be used for good on wildlife conservation projects. Check it out!

    Let’s work through an example

In traditional programming we use Data, assign Rules and evaluate using the rules to get the Answers.

With machine learning we use Data, provide the Answers and it creates the Rules.
