Oscar and Cameron from the Department of Conservation, who use Spyfish Aotearoa to assist the monitoring of Marine Protected Areas in Taranaki
Over the past 3 years, Wildlife.ai and the Department of Conservation (DOC) have collaborated on Spyfish Aotearoa, building a range of technology tools to efficiently monitor fish populations in Marine Protected Areas in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Watch the video below for a summary of how DOC uses Spyfish Aotearoa alongside their Baited Underwater Video, and how it has streamlined their processes.
Using Artificial Intelligence tools to accelerate conservation, we have created a pipeline to clean and standardise existing data, built apps for uploading new videos and field information, trained AI models to recognise snapper and blue cod from baited underwater footage, and built a dashboard to present the results.
This is a great success story for how technology can increase the efficiency and effectiveness of conservation work. The data gathered can also help tell the story of what impact Marine Protected Areas are having on marine ecosystems.
Thank you to our talented Data Scientist Kalindi Fonda and all our volunteers who have helped train our AI models through the Zooniverse platform over the years – your work really makes a difference for our oceans.
