Opportunity Description

Summary: This volunteer opportunity focuses on developing embedded software for the Wildlife Watcher camera. You’ll work on image processing and optimisation, prioritising low power consumption for efficient operation.

Background: We’re collaborating with the NZ Department of Conservation and local communities to build the Wildlife Watcher. This innovative camera captures wildlife footage and uses AI to identify animal species.

Timeline: The project is expected to take 3-6 months.

Volunteer Responsibilities

Tasks: Develop embedded software for the Wildlife Watcher camera. Maintain clear documentation and collaborate with the Wildlife.ai team.

Deliverables/milestones

• Hardware Communication: Develop firmware to enable communication between all components within the Wildlife Watcher camera.
• Image Processing & Optimization: Design and implement embedded software to process captured images with minimal power consumption.
• Version Control & Documentation: Establish and maintain clear documentation for the developed software using a version control system (e.g., Git).
• Team Collaboration: Participate in regular meetings with the Wildlife.ai team for project discussions and feedback.
• Project Documentation: Write a blog post summarising your work on the project for the Wildlife.ai website upon project completion.

Time requirements: We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers who can dedicate 15 hours per week on an ongoing basis. The position is remote, so you can work from your preferred location.

Equipment & Resources: We’ll provide specific hardware and software related to the Wildlife Watcher (development boards, software subscriptions). You’ll need to have a reliable laptop, internet connection, and dedicated workspace to work remotely.

Skills and Experience

Required: Experience developing software in C, Version Control, and Microcontroller Programming.

Optional: Debugging and Troubleshooting: Advanced debugging skills to identify and resolve complex software issues.
