On February 26, 15 team members gathered for the Wildlife.ai Product Showcase to share project updates, discuss challenges, and strengthen collaboration. The session featured an update on Wildlife Watcher and presentations on Spyfish Aotearoa and Wild About AI.

Wildlife Watcher – Presented by Karolina Kisiel

Karolina provided an update on Wildlife Watcher, which continues to develop a smart camera system for monitoring cold-blooded species.

The team has expanded, welcoming two new data rangers and an additional firmware developer. Hardware testing is progressing, with PCBs now being evaluated using a structured framework. Significant advancements have also been made in AI and data science, including the development of a new annotation tool and improvements in high-resolution image capture. The mobile app is taking shape, with database migration completed and ongoing work on connectivity.

The next phase will focus on user authentication, refining DevOps workflows, and further testing motion detection capabilities.

Spyfish Aotearoa – Presented by Kalindi Fonda

Kalindi presented Spyfish Aotearoa, which is leveraging AI and citizen science to accelerate the identification of fish species from baited underwater video surveys.

The team has made progress in standardizing data collection, with a new mobile app undergoing field testing. Data migration to AWS and SharePoint is enhancing accessibility, while collaboration with the LUMI supercomputer is advancing machine learning models for fish detection.

Work will continue on improving app usability, finalizing the data pipeline, and refining species identification models with expert-reviewed datasets.

Wild About AI – Presented by Tash Сoulson

Tash introduced Wild About AI, an educational initiative integrating AI into conservation learning.

The curriculum has been refined into a six-lesson structure aligned with the New Zealand curriculum, allowing for broader adoption. Five schools are set to participate in the program starting in April 2025, with additional content development underway, including field video materials and expert interviews.

Efforts are now focused on finalizing digital resources for educators and expanding partnerships with schools and conservation groups.
